Christ Our Advocate: 1 John 2:1-2
1. The admonition not to sin
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin . . . 1 John 2:1 (ESV)
20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, Romans 5:20 (ESV)
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Romans 6:1-2 (ESV)
2. The advocate for when we sin
1 . . . But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1 John 2:1 (ESV)
Satan: “accuses them day and night before our God.” Revelation 12:10 (ESV)
3. The atonement that covers our sin
2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
1 John 2:2 (ESV)
16“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (ESV)
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. John 1:10 (ESV)
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. 1 John 2:15-17 (ESV
