Conscience and Confidence: 1 John 3:19-24

1. The confidence of an assured heart
19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 1 John 3:19-21 (ESV)

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 (ESV)

3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. 4 For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.
1 Corinthians 4:3-5 (ESV)

2. The prayer of an assured heart
22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 1 John 3:22 (ESV)

1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus . . . 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
Romans 8:1; 34-35 (ESV)

18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. Psalm 66:18 (ESV)

19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, Hebrews 10:19 (ESV)

16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)

16   . . .  The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. James 5:16 (ESV)

7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. John 15:7 (ESV)

3. The obedient faith of an assured heart
23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.
1 John 3:23-24 (ESV)

6 For in Christ Jesus . . .  only faith working through love. Galatians 5:6 (ESV)

6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Galatians 4:6 (ESV)
